I recently was coaching a client and was talking about what motivates her to move forward in her life. I asked her whether she would walk to Sydney by Christmas if I promised the answers to her problems and she said “no, I couldn’t walk to Sydney, it’s impossible.” This was on the 24th November this year.
Then I asked her if she would do it for $1,000,000 and her answer was the same.
Finally I asked her if she would walk to Sydney for $10,000,000. Again she said “I couldn’t, not even for that much money it is impossible to walk there by Christmas.”
I then went through the exercise of working out the mathematics of the situation. Without boring you with the whole equation it worked out she would need to walk 4.9 km/h 8 hours a day to make it to Sydney by Christmas. I then Googled the average walking speed of a human being and it was 5 km/h. I proved to her it was not only possible but also very doable. She still doubted herself.
This highlighted to me just how much we all hold ourselves back in our lives by deciding a situation is impossible without even trying to find a solution.
How many times in your life have you looked at an opportunity that has presented itself and decided it wasn’t possible to achieve without even looking at the reality of the situation. It might have been a new career or business idea that you decided you couldn’t do because it looked too good to be true or a relationship you didn’t pursue because the person didn’t seem that interested in you etc etc.
The whole reason you sabotage yourself in your life is because of fear that the situation won’t turn out the way you really want it to. So we paralyse ourselves by over analysing what’s happening until we find a reason to walk away and not try.
I absolutely believe it is better to try and fail then to never try at all. There are many different versions of this statement quoted through the years and they all end on one thing. Go out and shoot for your dreams, what is the worst that can happen you will end up where you are now…….so what. Some people believe it’s better to leave a dream unfulfilled than to try the dream and it doesn’t measure up to what you hoped it would.
If you go out and try something new and it doesn’t work than try again and again and again until it does. Persistence overcomes resistance every time. Never take no for an answer when it comes to your life and your happiness.
If you are in a relationship that fails then find a new one and try harder to make that one work, eventually you can’t help but succeed. Same for your career or business, same for your health and fitness. If you try to lose weight once, and it doesn’t happen, don’t give up sit on the couch and eat donuts all day, get off your backside and get into action again.
NEVER GIVE UP and you will be amazed by the results.
Your walk to Sydney starts with the first step, get up and take it.
