ARE YOU THE RABBIT OR THE DUCK?

Look at the image above; do you see a rabbit or a duck?

This is an exercise in perception and that is exactly what we do when we look at our lives.

When you look at your life you constantly make decisions about how something looks or how you are going to think about a certain situation. For example, if you were to get fired from your job you could look at it 2 ways,

1. This is the absolute worst thing that has ever happened to me and I don’t know what I am going to do about it. Or

2. This is a great opportunity for me to get out and do something I really love because without this push I would have stayed in my comfort zone for a lot longer and missed out on great opportunities.

Now I am not saying that making these distinctions will be easy but this is probably the only part of the situation under your control. It doesn’t matter what happens in your life you can never go back and change it, you might be able to rectify it but never change the history. This being the case then deciding how you are going to look at something is critical to how you feel about yourself and your life.

I recently had a client I was coaching and talking to him I was pointing out how he was always looking at the worst in his life. He perceived everything to be negative and hard work when he actually had a lot of amazing things going on and really no major issues to deal with. He has a great relationship, business, friends etc etc. He said to me “geez it is like I have Emotional Anorexia”. I have never thought of it like that but it makes perfect sense. A person who suffers from Anorexia does not see themselves for how they really are, they see themselves in a totally different way and their perception is very different to their reality. I am not suggesting for a minute that a person suffering from Anorexia can just change their perception and be cured. It is an insidious mental illness that takes clinical treatment to cure. Your perceptions of your life though are not a mental illness but a choice.

They way you look at everything in your life is absolutely a choice and the way you feel about yourself and everything around you is 100% tied to which perception you choose. Always ask yourself am I looking at a Rabbit or a Duck here? I don’t know which one is better or worse as that is just perspective and opinion exactly the same way you think about yourself is your perspective or opinion. I would suggest that if you are not happy with what’s going on in your life then change your perception as this will lead to you taking totally different action and resulting in totally different results.

Sometimes “stuff” just happens in your life and you can only control how you think about it.

So choose whether you are looking at a Rabbit or a Duck and consciously choose how you want to feel about it.

Happy hunting and live an awesome life.
